This is how I had imagined things to be, a group working together. Our rig, which is parked right behind our Leads, has turned out to be the gathering place, just as it was in our stationary home. We thought it was finally our time to enjoy this lifestyle and all was going according to our plan. The gates opened and we were first on the shift, we all worked 8 hours on and 8 hours off and things went so smoothly, we were all upbeat and the rules were being enforced, as they should be, but then…

After returning from our first time off things changed drastically and all for the worse. We still worked very well as a group but the rules changed, actually, there were no longer any rules and anything was acceptable. NOT following rules should not be tolerated and we should not throw our arms up and say, “That is the way it is.” Management is given rules to abide by and should be backed up by the higher ups in order for us to maintain any sort of peace. I have a hard time when rules are given to us, then within one day, they are thrown out the window and anything, and just about everything is allowed with no recourse to stand by.

Then when things began to get out of control workers began associating NASCAR fans with the chaos instead of where it really should be and that is with the inefficient ways of the chain of command and backing one another when a rule is enforced. The fans were confused since one Workamper who followed the rules would not let them in and then the next moment someone else would let in their friend under the same circumstance. When a Workamper complains over the “Luck of the Draw” and is not told to hit the road but instead escorted to several other spots until they find the one that suits them should not be acceptable but is exactly what happened to one couple.

We were not as lucky as others were and really did not have the best campground to work in but we were willing to make the best of it. This was hard to do once we found out if we complained enough we would have been able to get into the infield where we had dreamed we would be instead of the dustiest place in the track. We do not want to believe that good things only come to those who whine the most but…

You are responsible for your own travel to and from the track and you must secure your own space since there is none provided at the track for the Workampers (this is being researched and may change in the future).  In February there is a major price increase of nearby campsites, RV spaces and hotels and this should be taken into consideration when accepting any position since you will be paying approximately $100 per night for a place nearby to sleep and shower.  If you go more than 30 miles from the track the prices begin to get lower but then you will have to drive in for the day.  The increase I am informed is not the case in July.  The pay is around minimum wage which is $6.40 per hour and you can plan to be working 10 to 12 hour shifts and your check will be sent to you within 10 days after the event, they do not have direct deposit.

They are really extra kind to the workers and really go out of their way to make sure that you are happy.  You are allowed to carry a camera, a Sharpie for autographs and the way they work your time, you get paid for all hours even though you usually work one hour on and then one hour off.  During which time you may watch the race or check out areas around the track, if you are working the infield you can check out things in there.

We are very pleased with it all and would highly recommend it to others.  If you want any further information just send us an email and we will give you names, etc. to help you get your foot in the door if this is a dream of yours.
